Fulton County Business Resources

Fulton County has the largest population of all 159 counties in Georgia, estimated in 2009 at over 1 million residents. Most official literature states that the County was named in honor of inventor Robert Fulton who in 1807 built the Clermont, a steamboat that revolutionized river travel and is considered to have played a pivotal part in the expansion of the South. But more recent research shows that the name may have originated from Hamilton Fulton, a surveyor for the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The County was not named though, until 1853 when it became the 144th county to be created in Georgia. It was formed when neighboring DeKalb County split, leaving the western half to become Fulton County. In 1932 during the Great Depression, Fulton grew in size. In an effort to reduce expenses, the government combined Milton and Campbell counties with Fulton County. This consolidation gave the County its unique elongated shape. Of great importance politically, Fulton County is home to the state capitol of Atlanta, although 10% of the city’s residents still live in DeKalb County. The other cities in this diverse region include:

  • Sandy Springs
  • Alpharetta
  • Roswell
  • Milton
  • Johns Creek
  • Mountain Park
  • Chattahoochee Hills
  • Fairburn
  • East Point
  • College Park
  • Hapeville
  • Palmetto
  • Union City

Notable residents of Fulton County history include Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel Prize winner and civil rights leader; Helen Douglas Mankin, Georgia’s first US congresswoman; Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind; singer Gladys Knight and NBA Hall of Fame inductee Walt Frazier, Jr. Adding to the rich culture of Fulton County, the area is home to several prominent corporations, including AT&T, Coca-Cola, Georgia-Pacific, United Parcel Service, the Home Depot, Delta Air Lines and CNN.
