Cumming Georgia Business Attorneys

Cumming is the county seat of Forsyth County, sits on 5.9 square miles of land and is located 40 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia. The area has a rich history that was first documented in 1755, when the Cherokee people came into the area. During a two-year period the Cherokee engaged in a series of battles with the Creek tribe over hunting territory. The Cherokee eventually prevailed and the Creek moved south of the Chattahoochee River. The Cherokee people and the white settlers lived in peaceful coexistence until the discovery of gold in 1828. Eventually the Cherokee were moved from the area under the Treaty of New Echota, signed in 1835. After this point, counties were formed in the region and Cumming was officially founded in 1833. The city is named after William Cumming from Savannah, a high-ranking Colonel who served the US military in several key posts, including Major General of the US Army. The city was part of the gold mining boom in northern Georgia in the 1830’s and 1840’s. But the lure of greater riches from the California gold rush of 1849 pushed the city’s economy into a depression. New railroad lines bypassed Cumming and many gold miners left the area hoping to strike it rich in California. The economy in Cumming rallied on the wave created by the cotton industry, but the boll weevil infestation of 1917 left the cotton fields devastated. Civil unrest also affected the city throughout much of the 20th century. After World War II, Buford Dam was constructed. No one could have imagined the positive impact that this project would have on Cumming. The dam’s reservoir, named Lake Lanier, has become a prime area for vacationers and people looking to acquire lake front property. Cumming really started to flourish when US Route 19 (Georgia Route 400) was expanded and people moving into the area could easily commute to Atlanta. Today, many of the city’s 6,000 citizens commute to jobs in Atlanta.
