Forsyth County Business Resources

Forsyth County is one of Georgia’s fastest growing regions in the United States. Situated close to Atlanta, this county is a popular bedroom community for commuters working in the city. The county’s population is estimated at around 160,000 residents and boasts the reputation as the wealthiest county in Georgia, with a median household income of $85,000. The county is named after John Forsyth who was Governor of Georgia from 1827 to 1829. Forsyth was also Secretary of State under Presidents Martin Van Buren and Andrew Jackson. The county got its start in 1832 when the area was taken from a track of Cherokee County land and nine surrounding counties. The discovery of gold attracted settlers to the region, but agriculture became the county’s mainstay until introduction of the poultry industry in the 1950’s. This new industry brought prosperity, but continued economic growth was not sustainable until Georgia State Route 400 was built, connecting the county to Atlanta. As with many areas of the south, civil rights struggles play a role in the county’s history. In 1987 a series of demonstrations were organized by activists to show that the area had overcome this history. Unfortunately, counter demonstrations also took place and the county ended up in the media spotlight. The civil rights demonstration on January 24, 1987 is believed to be the largest in the United States since the 1970’s. 6,000 counter demonstrators opposed the 20,000 pro-civil rights marchers. Despite the situation, civil rights activists considered that the demonstration was a success. Due to the multi-racial makeup of the pro-civil rights marchers, two-thirds of whom were white, proponents considered the demonstrations to be an indication that Forsyth had finally moved past the racial issues of the past.

Today, residents of Forsyth County enjoy the convenient proximity to Atlanta and the area’s spectacular natural resources. Two of the region’s important attractions are Lake Lanier, a sprawling 37,000-acre lake that was created when Buford Dam was built, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Residents of Forsyth also enjoy the county’s 15 parks and world-class golf courses.
