Gwinnett County Business Resources

Gwinnett County sits on 437 square miles and is located 30 miles northeast of Atlanta. In close proximity to Atlanta, population growth in the county has skyrocketed in the last decade, jumping by more than 200,000 residents since the year 2000. Estimates for 2009 state the population at just over 800,000 residents. Gwinnett was created in 1818 and is named for Button Gwinnett, a state delegate and one of the three Georgia men who signed the Declaration of Independence. The county was formed from Indian land ceded from the Cherokee and Creek tribes, and from a piece of land that was previously part of Jackson County. Today Gwinnett County is one of the state’s fastest growing counties, and includes the cities of:

One of the first structures to be built in the area was the house of Elisha Winn. Located close to Dacula, this building became the first courthouse in the county. Winn was asked to pick the site of the county seat, and with $200 Winn paid for a 250–acre parcel in the center of the region for this purpose. In 1821, Lawrenceville was designated as the county seat. Court business was originally run from a log cabin on the site until 1824, when a permanent structure was constructed. At that time, Gwinnett County consisted primarily of a group of farming communities. In 1851, a cotton mill serving the surrounding region was established and the population of Lawrenceville grew to 11,257. But as in many parts of Georgia, the Civil War took its toll on the area. Many buildings were lost and Union forces burned down the mill in 1864. Unrelated to the war, the courthouse was destroyed in a fire in 1871. This fire wiped out most of the land deeds and county records. A new courthouse was later built, but was also replaced when the county outgrew it after 12 years. The replacement was constructed in 1885 for $23,000. This building is known today as the Historic Courthouse and was the center of county government operations until 1988. Railroad operations spurred on economic growth in the county in the late 1800’s. When the Danville and Piedmont Air Line was constructed in 1871, with track running through the county, the cities of Norcross, Suwanee, Buford and Duluth sprang up to support the activity. With further railroad expansion in 1881, Lawrenceville was connected to Suwanee, and later to Dacula in 1891. Major industry came to the county in 1868 when a tannery was established in the area. A second tannery was founded and both became well known for their handcrafted saddles. The tanneries continued to support the local economy through the depression era of the 1930s, as farming began to decline. In 1950 the Buford Dam project was authorized, bringing hydroelectric power to the region. The dam has also provided a source of revenue from tourism and recreational activities. Minutes from Lake Lanier, today Gwinnett County is a thriving region that is attractive for both its natural beauty and accessibility to Atlanta via Interstate 85.
