Norcross Georgia Lawyer Resources

Norcross is located in Gwinnett County on 4.1 square miles, has a population estimated at 10,000 residents and is located on the eastern continental divide. Chartered in October of 1870, the city was included into the National Register of Historic Places in the early 1980’s. Its location on the divide gave the town a special role in the region’s early development. The ridge originally served as a major passageway for the Cherokee and Creek Indians traveling through the area. Then during the War of 1812, two forts (Fort Daniel and Peachtree Fort) were built on either side of the divide and were connected by the Indian trail. The trail became known as Old Peachtree Road, and by the 1840’s it had become a stagecoach route that connected Alabama and South Carolina. As the area gained in popularity, the small towns of Flint Hill and Pinckneyville were established. In 1856, Jonathan Norcross, the forth Mayor of Atlanta, proposed that a railroad be built in the area. The project was approved, but its completion was ultimately delayed due to the Civil War. Finally in 1869 the first twenty miles of track had been laid for the Richmond–Danville Railroad. With the completion of the railroad around 1870, the town was officially established as Norcross. The town was situated on 250 acres of land that surrounded the railway terminal. John Thrasher had purchased the land and named the town for his good friend, Jonathan Norcross. But the railway lured settlers away from the towns of Flint Hill and Pinckneyville and these communities declined as people moved to Norcross to be near to the commerce of the railroad line. The railway also brought tourism to Norcross and it soon became a popular escape for the wealthy from Atlanta. During the 20th century, roads and expressways were built that by–passed the city leaving the town center intact as an example of an historic railroad town. For this reason the city was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and its charm is apparent for those who visit Norcross today.
